Fans of women’s MMA have come to expect some of the best female mixed martial artists in the XFC cage. On Friday, Sept 28th they won’t be disappointed as Sofia Bagherdai faces Sarah Maloy in Knoxville, TN at the Knoxville Civic Auditorium. XFC 20 will be the epicenter of the women’s MMA universe, live on AXStv, as Bagherdai will make her long awaited debut in the XFC cage after a knee injury forced her out of a match-up with Heather Jo Clark in June.
After dominating the flyweight scene for several years and with an impressive 4-1 record, which included two impressive first round knockouts, Sofia Bagherdai was unsuccessful in her first bout at 115 pounds earlier this Spring. The Wand Fight Team product struggled with the weight cut and came out on the wrong side of a unanimous decision. Now back at 125 pounds, Bagherdai is looking to make a statement in her natural weight class, Flyweight. “I’m going back to flyweight,” explained Bagherdai. “115 was a pretty tough cut and I’m excited to be back at 125 where I feel comfortable and have had some success. I’ve been training hard and my knee is back to 100%. The recovery took longer than I wanted, but I’m ready to fight. I was really looking forward to competing for the XFC earlier this year against Heather Clark, until I got injured. Mr. Prisco was patient with me to get better and I’m excited and ready to fight on the card in September. I really want to go out there and put on a thrilling performance. I’d like to try and get another knockout win in the record books. I know Sarah is very tough and she will bring it, but I’m training hard every day to be the better fighter in Knoxville. It’s going to be a lot of fun.”
Riding high off an impressive win over Michele Gutierrez earlier this year, Sarah Maloy established herself as a contender at featherweight. Known primarily as a wrestler, the Oklahoma native showcased her superior stand-up and even pulled some ‘Superwoman’ punches out of her bag of tricks to earn the unanimous decision. Now, ‘The KO Kid’ will be looking to continue her momentum with another win at XFC 20 on Sept 28th. “This girl is going to push Sofia,” exclaimed XFC President John Prisco. “When you look at it on paper, it’s a classic grappler vs. striker matchup. If it goes to the ground, Sarah has to be the favorite. Despite her strong wrestling background, she kept the fight standing in her last fight. And she dominated! On the other side, I’m really excited about Sofia Bagherdai’s debut at XFC 20,” continued the President. “Sofia dominated Women’s MMA before it really went mainstream in 2007 and 2008. Now she’s back and she’s at 125, where she made her run a few years ago. If she can get by Sarah in September she jumps right into the mix with Marianna Kheyfets and Heather Clark who are sitting at the top of our featherweight division. I’m telling you this fight is a coin flip either way. Sofia Bagherdai vs Sarah Maloy is going to be a great one for the fans around the world. Tune in Live on AXStv, if you are too far from Knoxville!”
