Longstanding Portsmouth MMA promotion, Shock n Awe, has partnered for the first time with Safe MMA for the medical preclearance of its professional fight card for tonight’s Shock n Awe 25 at the Pyramid Centre.
Shock n Awe Director Gareth Johnson commented on the decision taken with co-Director Brian Adams:
“At Shock N Awe we have always taken fighter safety very seriously. Having the professional fighters on our events cleared to compete by Safe MMA was the next logical step for our promotion to take. We will continue to work with Safe MMA to even further improve the safety of all competitors on our events.”
The promotion joins a growing number that have adopted independent, third party approval of competitors’ fitness to compete, which increases safety through avoidance of conflict of interests in decisions related to an athlete’s medical health. The Safe MMA partnership provides independent advice to competitors and a confidential central database by which it can inform promoters of a competitor’s medical status to compete and of any suspensions. Safe MMA provides a unified standard enabling a ‘medical passport’ to compete on partner shows. The doctors on the Safe MMA medical committee contribute their time on an entirely voluntary basis and receive no payment from either the project or partner promotions.
UK and Ireland event organizers currently working with Safe MMA include: Cage Warriors, BAMMA, BCMMA, Shock N Awe, Battlezone, Cage Kings, Clan Wars, WCFC, Cage Ring Championship, Akuma, Cage Legacy, Real Fighting Championship, Wimp 2 Warrior, Irish Mixed Martial Arts Association and United Kingdom Mixed Martial Arts Federation.
International promotions that have worked with Safe MMA on British soil include KSW, Bellator and ACB, while Safe MMA provides a clearance service for all International Mixed Martial Arts Federation tournaments
