The Bellator Fighting Championships announced today that heavyweight champion Cole Konrad will return to action against veteran Paul “The Headhunter” Buentello. Bellator Chairman and CEO Bjorn Rebney stated in the official release at Bellator.com;
Cole had three very dominant performances for us last season on his way to becoming our first Heavyweight World Champion. I’m expecting big things from Cole, and Paul will provide a fantastic test for our young champ.
The undefeated Konrad (7-0) claimed the title when he submitted Neil Grove at Bellator 32 in October 2010. Buentello (29-13) will be by the most experienced fighter that Konrad as faced in his young career. The well traveled “Headhunter” has competed in most major MMA promotions including the UFC, Strikeforce, Affliction and King of the Cage. This experience is not lost on Konrad who states “I feel like this fight with Paul is going to be the toughest fight of my career, and that’s exactly how I’m preparing for it. Just because he’s a little older doesn’t mean he’s not dangerous. He has a ton of experience, and that definitely works to his advantage.”
Bellator 42 rakes place on April 23rd from the Lucky Star Casino in Concho, Oklahoma. The event will be shown live on MTV2.
