The Bellator Fighting Championship announced that welterweight champion Ben Askren returns to action in a non-title fight against veteran Nick “The Goat” Thompson. The bout takes place at Bellator 40 on April 9th from the First Council Casino in Newkirk, Oklahoma.
Askren (7-0) last competed at Bellator 33 in Oct. 2010 when he captured the welterweight title with a five round unanimous decision over Lyman Good. The young champion appears ready for his next challenge, according to the Bellator.com official announcement;
I come to fight every single time. Whether you’re good or you’re bad, I still want to smash you, and it’s going to be the same thing when I fight Nick Thompson. It doesn’t matter what his record is, I’m looking to kick his ass.
The well traveled Thompson (38-13-1) has competed in the UFC, Strikeforce, Sengoku and is the former Bogdog
welterweight champion. He will be looking to put the brakes on a three fight losing streak when he meets Askren and he feels that his experience could be the x-factor.
I think the biggest advantage for me in this fight with Ben is the fact that I’ve fought more than 50 fights. I’ve fought in every organization, I’ve fought against the best fighters in the world, and I’ve been ranked in the top ten. Ben hasn’t been there. I plan on hitting him like he’s never been hit before and I’m excited to find out how he’s going to react.
