Bellator 35: Weedman upsets Hornbuckle, Hawn’s standup bests Wallhead

Brent WeedmanBrent Weedman become the first competitor to advance to the semifinals of the Bellator Season 4 welterweight tournament with a unanimous decision win over Season 2 finalist Dan “The Handler” Hornbuckle. The closely contested bout was scored 29-28 by each of the three judges.

Weedman has now won ten consecutive fights as he avenges a 2006 submission loss to Hornbuckle during Legends of Fighting 12. The majority of the fight was a tactical ground battle with both fighters working for submissions and demonstrating sound defense. Weedman ended the first and second rounds with last second submission attempts. Those may have made an impression on the judges as the third round was clearly controlled by Hornbuckle.

In the second quarterfinal fight of the night Rick Hawn won a unanimous decision over Jim “Judo” Wallhead. The fight was basically a boxing match and it was Hawn who demonstrated the more effective striking. Hawn was able to put together combinations with follow-up leg kicks to keep Wallhead at bay. Hawn remains undefeated as he improves his professional MMA record to 10-0. The bout was scored 30-27, 29-28 and 29-28 by the judges.
