Bellator Chairman and CEO Bjorn Rebney announced via Twitter that former lightweight champion Eddie Alvarez will take on Patricky “Pitbull” Freire on October 12th. The event, which is expected to be Bellator 76, will take place at Caesars Windsor in Ontario. It will be televised live on MTV2 and streamed free on Spike.com.
Alvarez (23-3) became Bellator’s inaugural lightweight champion with a submission win over Toby Imada in 2009. He held the title until November 2011 when he was defeated by Michael Chandler at Bellator 58. Alvarez would rebound from that loss with an impressive first round knockout of Shinya Aoki at Bellator 66. The bout with Freire will be the last fight on his current contract with Bellator.
Freire (10-3) will look to get back on the winning track after a disappointing submission loss to Lloyd Woodard in the quarterfinals of the season six tournament at Bellator 62. The hard-hitting Freire notable wins over Kurt Pellegrino, Toby Imada and former WEC champion Rob McCullough.
