The Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Connecticut played host to the quarterfinal round of the Bellator season six welterweight tournament. Ben Saunders, Karl Amoussou, Bryan Baker and David Rickels each picked up wins to advance to the semifinal round.
The semifinals take place at Bellator 67 on May 4th with Saunders taking Baker while Amoussou clashes with Rickels.
Saunders, a finalist last season, enters the tournament as one of the favorites. He held off a tough Raul Amaya to earn a unanimous decision. Saunders threatening with a myriad of submission attempts throughout the fifteen minutes while also dishing out punishing work on the ground.
Rickels must have had other plans for the evening because he needed just 22 seconds to put away Jordan Smith. Smith, who was a replacement for Brian Foster, got clipped from a right by Rickels and it was over soon afterwards as he was blitzed by flurry of strikes for the TKO loss.
Baker was successful in his welterweight debut but you have to wonder if the weight cut from middleweight affected his performance. He successfully avoided the big power of Carlos Pereira on his way to a split decision win. Baker utilized side kicks to keep Pereira at bay. He would score a timely takedown late in the fight in which he advanced to a dominant crucifix position.
Amoussou demonstrated his destructive offense which led to a first round submission win over Chris Lozano. After a tense feeling out process, Amoussou smashed Lozona with a head kick who rushed into for a takedown. A beautiful sweep from Amoussou put him in full mount where he rained down a barrage of strikes which forced Lozano to give up his back. Amoussou quickly finished the fight with a rear-naked choke of Lozano.
