Bellator 62 Results – Michel, Weedman, Hawn, Woodard advance in Lightweight Tournament

bellator 62 posterSeason 6 of the Bellator Fighting Championships rolls into Laredo, Texas on Friday, March 23rd for Bellator 62.

The event will air on MTV2 and EPIX HD beginning at 8:00pm ET with the preliminary card streaming at 7:00pm ET on Spike.com.

Taking place from the Laredo Energy Arena, the Bellator 62 main card features the quarterfinals of the Season 6 lightweight tournament.

It was expected that the Season 5 heavyweight tournament winner would finally be decided between Thiago Santos and Eric Prindle. The fight was postponed a week after Prindle was ill with flu-like symptoms. However, Santos missed weight yesterday and Prindle was declared the tournament winner. He will now get a title shot against champion Cole Konrad.

Bellator 62 – Preliminary Card

Joseph Daily vs. Sean Spencer
Spencer defeated Daily by rear-naked choke submission at 1:24 of the second round.

Douglas Frey vs. Rad Martinez
Martinez defeated Frey by technical knockout at 4:08 of the first round.

Jacob Kirwan vs. Dave Jansen
Jansen defeated Kirwin by unanimous decision (30-27, 29-28, 29-28). It was a very close fight as the fighters were evenly matched and showcased strong grappling and submission defense.

Steven Peterson vs. Chris Jones
Jones defeated Peterson by split decision (29-28, 27-30, 29-28).

Oscar De La Parra vs. Cosmo Alexandre

Luis Vega vs. Sonny Luque
Vega defeated Luque by arm-triangle submission at 3:43 of the first round.

Bellator 62 – Main Card (Lightweight Quarterfinals)

Thiago Michel vs. Rene Nazare
Michel defeated Nazare by split decision (29-28, 28-29, 29-28). Nazare had no answer for the standup of Michel who utilized a variety of flashy kicks and timely combinations to keep the fight at a comfortable range. When Nazare was able to take the action to the ground he was unable to mount any consistent offense. Michel advances to the lightweight tournament semifinals.

J.J. Ambrose vs. Brent Weedman
Weedman defeated Ambrose by von flue choke submission at 3:26 of the second round. Weedman takes the entertaining fight to join Michel in the semifinal round. Weedman dropped Ambrose but decided not to follow him to the ground. Ambrose would recover and threaten with submission attempts. Before the forcing the tap, Weedman was also doing more damage on the ground with knees to the body, landing a big upkick and catching Ambrose in a crucifix.

Rick Hawn vs. Ricardo Tirloni
Hawn defeated Tirloni by technical knockout at 2:36 of the first round. A crushing right from Hawn dropped Tirloni. Hawn immediately attacked Tirloni with brutal hammerfists until the referee jumps in to put an end to the punishment.

Patricky “Pitbull” Freire vs. Lloyd Woodard
Woodard defeated Freire by kimura submission at 1:46 of the second round. It was an amazing back-and forth bout that was fought at a crazy pace. Woodard and Freire wasted no time getting after it. Woodard appeared to have a slight edge in the first round until Freire landed a series of lefts that had him in trouble late in the first round. Freire shot but caught a knee from Freire on the way in. Woodard ended up on top and began to pound Pitbull with hammerfists. Woodard moved to side control where he was able to secure Freire’s arm where he rolled while appling the torque. Freire’s elbow seemed to put as he is forced to tap from the pain. Woodard secures the final spot in the lightweight tournament semifinals.
